I have always enjoyed watching women’s gymnastics during the Olympics. The strength, grace, and concentration the gymnasts possess are truly amazing. The practice, training and commitment they exhibit consumes almost every waking hour. To be successful in gymnastics, it is all about the details. I also love hearing about the Olympians back stories. All of the struggles and injuries they have had to overcome just for an opportunity to perform at their best to represent their country. Everything they have gone through to persevere – the routine is all about the details.
Their mindset is very similar to a dental practice. Putting the patient first in all that we do in our practice is really all about the details. Think about what occurs in your office every day. Routinely, all forms need to be filled out correctly; insurance information received and input correctly, all clinical aspects administered correctly.
However, there are just as many important details that are not as task oriented as the ones I have already mentioned. What about communication? Is everyone on your team prepared to answer your patients’ questions, or able to bring them to the appropriate person in your office for answers? Are they phrasing their words in such a way that the patient understands and fells they are the priority? From a patients perspective, working with your non-clinical staff can be even more important to keeping the relationship where you desire it to be. Having your team communicate effectively to your patients is all about the details.
Watching the USA women’s gymnastics team compete for the gold medal is always exciting, and this year was no exception. To observe these athletes perform with such mastery with toes pointed just right, fingers placed just so, their exceptionalism to the details is amazing.
