Coach’s Corner | Key Insights from the World Business Forum

Dental Consultant

I think it is important for me to continue to invest in my learning and attend conferences outside of the dental industry to see what other businesses are struggling with and how they are handling those obstacles. Last week I had the opportunity to attend a conference in New York City, WOBI – World Business Forum – where CEOs and executives from around the world attend to learn more about today’s most relevant topics in business management. In this month’s Coach’s Corner, I will share my key takeaways.

LEADERSHIP IS AN ISSUE NO MATTER WHAT INDUSTRY.

Companies are struggling with finding the right team members and keeping them.

This problem was echoed by every presenter on stage. All industries are looking for creative ideas for this problem.

Command & control vs leadership using the coaching method.

Each presenter had a different perspective, but all agreed that the old way of leadership, command & control, will not work today. This method started in the industrial age and an updated coaching method is preferred by all generations currently in the workforce.

Micromanagement is no longer needed.

When coaching is done correctly, and trust is built in your team, micromanagement is not needed, and team members will leave if they are treated in this manner.

If you are familiar with my ideas, you know I deeply believe in and teach leadership using the coaching method. The process I have used for over 25 years in business is now agreed as the preferred leadership style. Not only that, but the idea of creating a culture for your company is more important than ever for success.

I had the pleasure of meeting Amy Edmondson, who is the researcher I have studied regarding the concept she labeled as psychological safety. From a team perspective, having psychological safety is the ultimate goal of every team. Being able to openly take risks and express all ideas and concerns is deeply needed in our work environment. I had a moment to discuss how I used her research with not only my clients but also with my basketball teams. She was thrilled to listen to me and ask me questions about my approach. She was very gracious and appreciative to hear how I used her research in my work.

Culture is now more important than ever

I believe culture’s definition is rooted in behavior. It is the behavior of others that either makes us happy or not happy while working in the office. My definition is what is acceptable or unacceptable regarding behavior, especially the behavior of your entire team. I define it this way, so it is easier to understand. Each practice will be different, and each practice’s culture will also be different. When your entire team can create a list of what is and is not acceptable, it is amazing the clarity this will bring to your working environment. I was very pleased to hear every expert on the stage emphasize this point about culture. No longer is it something that you can push aside. Be proactive and create the culture you and your team want. This will help future team members as well.

Investing in your team is a must

Every expert at the WOBI conference said the future of business revolves around your team. The investment of time and money is something that must be done to be competitive in today’s market. Not only to retain your team members but also to hire the team members you want.
